Tal Shafir PhD, DMT received her dance teacher diploma from the Haifa Dance Center, which was directed by Lia Schubert, and her dance-movement therapist certification from University of Haifa, Israel. After several years of teaching dance and working as a dance-movement therapist with neurologically impaired children and the elderly, she pursued graduate degrees at University of Michigan, School of Kinesiology and completed a Masters in movement science and a PhD in neurophysiology of motor control. Dr. Shafir continued her studies with two postdoctoral fellowships: one with Prof. Betsy Lozoff at University of Michigan Center for Human Growth and Development, where she studied brain-behavior interactions in infants with iron deficiency, and the other with Prof. Jon-Kar Zubieta at University of Michigan Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute, where she was trained in affective neuroscience and brain imaging techniques. While working as a research investigator at the University of Michigan, Department of Psychiatry, Dr. Shafir’s research focused on movement-emotion interaction, its underlying brain mechanisms, and its translation into motor interventions for depression.
