Mrs. Atreyee Bhattacharyya was born in the year 1987, in Kolkata, India. Since childhood she had interest in observing people and in finding out uniqueness in individuals. This interest led her to study Psychology. She completed M.A in ‘Psychology’ from the University of Calcutta, with ‘Developmental Psychology’ as special paper. Her masters’ thesis was on the growing interest of adolescents in playing violent video games and to what extent immense playing of such games effects on aggression, pro-social behavior; impacts on overall adjustment and parent-child relationships. She pursued post graduate diploma in Cognitive Behavioural and Existential Counselling. While working as a counselor at ‘Dhrubashram’, an observational home for juvenile delinquent convicts, she came across several cases where children, having early history of abuse and neglect, being thwarted by parents and finally being exploited by the society, opted delinquent activities. Such experiences intrigued her to initiate researching the scenario of child abuse and neglect in India, its’ prevalence, short and long term effect on the victim. Atreyee had also worked in NGOs, who work with underprivileged, destitute children and children with intellectual and/or sensory disability. At present, she is pursuing her doctoral research, titled on “Indian adolescents’ perspective of childhood abuse: Incidence, Severity, Consequences and Disclosure”, at The University of Haifa, under the supervision of Prof. Rachel Lev-Wiesel and Prof. Mallika Banerjee (Co-supervisor, The University of Calcutta). Atreyee has always had keen interest in dancing. She has learnt Indian classical dance forms (Katthak, Varatnatyam and Odissi) over more than 18 years and as a stage performer she incorporates all three different type of dance style in her dance performances. Her passion for dance, music and paintings, intrigued her on Creative Art Therapies and Art Therapy has been a part in her present research.
